About 'college art scholarships'|South Carolina student winners named in annual fine arts scholarship competition








Where               to               attend               college,               is               a               huge               decision,               and               perhaps               one               of               the               biggest               that               a               student               will               have               to               make               at               such               a               young               age.

With               close               to               one               million               students               starting               college               every               year,               and               the               thousands               or               even               hundred               thousand               plus               dollars               that               higher               education               can               cost.

College               is               huge               business               for               both               the               prospective               student               and               the               institutions.

So               go               visit,               do               not               even               think               of               attending               a               school               that               you               have               not               physically               been               to.

Take               the               time               and               effort               to               make               the               tours               so               eventually               you               can               make               the               best               choice               of               how               to               spend               four               years               of               your               life.
               Start               the               tour               before               you               even               get               to               the               actual               college.

See               what               the               city               and               its               surroundings               are               like,               how               is               the               weather,               can               you               get               around,               could               you               live               in               this               town.

Sorry               parents,               but               little               Jimmy               just               might               leave               the               campus               library               to               do               something               fun,               so               drive               the               perimeter               of               the               school               and               surrounding               areas.

How               close               are               the               apartments,               restaurants,               bookstores,               coffee               shops,               movie               theaters,               and               where               are               the               dangerous               areas               of               town.
               When               you               arrive               at               campus,               most               visits               will               consist               of               a               tour,               and               meeting               with               admissions.

You               can               also               set               up               a               meeting               with               a               coach,               department               head,               music               director,               etc               if               you               have               a               special               interest.
               Campus               tours               are               generally               given               by               a               very               upbeat               and               successful               upper               classman.

Colleges               do               not               train               their               tour               guides               to               deceive               prospective               students,               but               they               do               caution               guides               to               avoid               unflattering               topics               and               campus               sites.

They               will               show               you               the               high               lights               of               campus,               the               new               gym,               the               new               theater,               the               best-looking               dorm,               the               high               tech               computer               lab,               and               the               old               brick               buildings               with               ivy               on               them.

TIP               -               They               show               you               the               cafeteria               if               the               food               looks               good,               and               skip               it               if               it               looks               like               C___.

An               interesting               side               note,               they               also               walk               backwards               while               talking               and               never               seem               to               fall.

This               is               the               time               for               you               to               ask               questions               to               get               a               current               students               opinion.

Parents               do               not               make               the               mistake               of               thinking               you               are               the               one               going               to               college,               and               ask               all               the               questions.

This               is               the               student's               time,               not               yours.

I               witnessed               a               tour               where               the               mom               videotaped               the               entire               process;               including               getting               pictures               of               the               dorm               bathrooms.

I               assume               the               student               would               be               excessively               embarrassed               to               ever               return               to               this               school.
               The               meeting               with               admissions               can               be               any               thing               from               short               and               informative               to               a               long               and               heard               it               before               kind               of               speech.

They               will               discuss               with               you               costs,               scholarships,               majors,               application               process,               and               due               dates.

TIP-               Many               schools               offer               scholarships               during               early               admissions               to               students               that               they               do               not               offer               later.

The               individual               admissions               officer               may               do               hundreds               of               these               per               summer,               and               get               into               a               bit               of               a               routine               or               rut.

Ask               questions,               admissions               would               rather               you               be               honest               and               tell               them               if               you               had               heard               most               of               the               information               before.
               Use               your               campus               visits               wisely,               as               they               could               save               you               in               the               long               term.

Here               are               some               observations               and               a               few               questions               for               admissions,               tour               guides,               and               students               you               might               make               while               on               campus.

(some               of               which               may               be               answered               by               the               school's               literature               or               Web               site)
               ·               See               a               dorm               you               did               not               see               on               the               tour.
               ·               Ask               current               students               what               they               do               on               weekends.
               ·               Browse               the               college               bookstore.
               ·               Eat               in               the               cafeteria.
               ·               Read               the               student               newspaper.
               ·               Wander               around               campus               by               yourself.

(Just               the               student               -               not               the               family)
               ·               Do               the               students               look               happy?
               ·               Is               it               is               a               conservative               or               liberal               college?
               ·               Is               their               a               religious               affiliation,               and               is               chapel               required?
               ·               How               are               the               students               dressed?
               ·               What               percentage               of               student's               live               on               campus?
               ·               Does               the               campus               feel               safe?
               ·               Ask               a               student               what               the               worst               thing               about               the               school               is.
               ·               Are               fraternities               and               sororities               a               big               part               of               campus               life?
               ·               Are               the               dorms               loud               or               quite?
               ·               What               is               the               drug               and               alcohol               use               like?
               ·               Listen               to               the               college's               radio               station.
               ·               How               are               the               athletics,               dramas,               or               musicals               at               the               school?
               ·               How               many               hours               a               week               do               students               study?
               ·               Are               faculty               members               interested               in               students               and               accessible               outside               of               class?
               ·               Do               many               students               go               home               on               weekends?
               ·               Is               it               possible               to               study               in               your               dorm               room?
               ·               Do               all               of               the               men               or               the               women               seem               to               be               wearing               expensive               name-brand               clothes?
               ·               Do               most               of               the               students               seem               to               be               on               the               outrageous               side               regarding               clothing,               hair               color,               and               body               art?
               ·               Would               you               feel               uncomfortable               or               comfortable               in               a               room               full               of               the               students               you               see               on               campus?
               ·               What               assistance               or               facilities               are               available               for               students               with               special               needs,               such               as               a               learning               disability,               physical               disability               or               other               health               problem?
               ·               What               is               the               campus               crime               rate,               and               what               on-               and               off-campus               security               is               available?
               ·               What               is               the               average               class               size               for               freshman-level               courses?
               ·               What               percentage               of               students               receive               financial               assistance?
               ·               What               is               the               graduation               rate?
               ·               What               kind               of               career-planning               and               job               placement               services               are               offered?
               ·               What               kinds               of               internships               are               available?
               ·               How               big               is               the               student               body?
               ·               What               opportunities               are               available               for               study               abroad?
               ·               What               housing               choices               are               available?
               ·               What               is               the               school's               level               of               academic               rigor               and               competitiveness?
               ·               What               is               the               faculty-student               ratio?
               ·               Is               the               school               on               a               semester,               quarter,               or               some               other               system?
               ·               Does               the               school               have               an               honor               system               or               code?
